The ClickBank Product Selection Criteria
Head over to ClickBank MarketPlace and Start Searching:
As you can see from above, this is the typical scene you will be doing as you start searching for your products. Few points to note:
- Best Keywords to put in your search should be targeted to your passion and your area of focus. This will help you to assess the Sales Page, should it appeal to you.
- As recommended by the expert marketers, it would be best to sort your search according to “High Gravity”
Once you are done with your searches, you will see a whole chunk of information, but just to narrow down to a single search result to showcase some important factors:

- $ earned/sale: $29.58
- %/sale (commission): 70%
- %refd: 64%
- Grav: 54.04
What does this figures mean to you? The first two stats are rather self-explanatory.
- $ earn/sale would mean for every sale you make, $29.58 is credited into your account.
- Out of the sales price, $29.58 or 70% of the selling price is reserved as your commission.
- %refd will basically mean what percentage of the vendor’s recent sales came through the promotion of Affiliates.
- Grav reflects the percentage number of active affiliates who have made recent sales.
Points to note from the experts:
- Aim for $/sale greater than $20 as it will be tough to profit with any paid marketing techniques like Pay-Per-Click if lesser than that.
- Aim for products paying at least 50% and most importantly, avoid those paying 80%-90%. The latter figures could just mean that the vendor depend solely on the efforts of Affiliates to bring in the sales for them.
- Aim for low referral percentage (below 65%). This will mean only a few other affiliates are competing.
- Go for Gravity roughly between 60 and 100. Anything below 60 would mean that the product is not popular to sell well and anything higher than 100 could mean that the product is already market saturated.
With these numbers in mind, you are ready to play to the logical side of sales. Next will be the emotional side of sales. Remember that initially I have asked you to choose products that are of your passion and area of focus?
Once you have narrowed down to either one or just a few products (best is 2) to promote, it’s time to click on “View Pitch Page” to look at the sales letter. Based on the knowledge of your passion, how convinced are you with the sales pitch? You may ask your friends to view through the sales letter as well to confirm your choice.
Once You Are Confirmed With Your Few Choices, It’s Time To Do Some Tests:
The Simplified Method:
The first is to do a Search Engine Test by doing a search on the actual product itself using the Product Name. Reasons for this are that some affiliate marketers will actually use their own version of domain names (indirectly related to the Product) to promote their affiliate links and their offered bonuses.
This method will help you:
- Get a feel of how many other affiliate sites are there promoting this product when someone does a direct search for the product – probably searching for a review before making a purchase.
- See if other affiliate marketers are eagerly promoting this product and you may jolly well jump into the bandwagon to “steal some ideas” on how to promote this and other products next time.
The Extra-Effort Method:
If you feel that you would like to provide a solution with this affiliate product. You will do another Search Engine test, by first using the free Google Keyword Tool to find the keywords of the product you intend to use in various promotional methods to link to the affiliate product.
Among the keywords, find a few that you, yourself, may use in Search Engines and do a search. See what results and Google Ads appear in the first few pages. This will let you know whether there are other affiliate products linked to these keywords in the Ads and Search Results.
If any of the results for the above two methods are satisfactory, you are more or less to promote the products.
Then You Are Ready!
Once you are ready with your choice of products, “Create Hoplink” and start promoting with these suggested methods:
- Article Marketing e.g. posting articles related to the product in ezinearticles
- Forum Marketing – Go to forums that are related to the nature of the product, then using part of the content of the product to answer some of the queries the members may have.
- SEO – common method is to create a simple affiliate website, e.g. new domain name and with Landing Pages
- Writing eBooks - A simple guide to make you an authority and also serve as a small incentive.
- Social Networking – Twitter & Facebook. A little personal suggestions will help.
- Web 2.0 Sites - Like Squidoo and HubPages, these are good sites that will help you to get backlinks.
