How To Run Your Online *Fill-In-The-Blank* Like A Real Business – Part 1 of 2

Note: To read the headline properly, the “fill-in-the-blank” can be area of your expertise like Home-Based Business, Affiliate Marketing (very lucrative), CPA Marketing (very common) or simply Online Marketing (e.g creation of your own product and selling it)

I have been reading up quite a number of books these few days on online entrepreneurship and in a few of the reads, the authors share the common system or beliefs on how to run your marketing like a real business (like those of big companies like Amazon or even Microsoft) and I have decided to sum them up in this post (in a 2 part series) and you can use them as your general guideline or process:

In this First Part, I will be sharing on the Mindset, and the Planning Strategies you can take on:

1. The Mindset

There’s been statistics being done and it’s found that more than 95% of people who are doing some sort of marketing or in a business have the mindset of “wishing” to succeed.

In other words, majority are not serious in what they are doing. It’s more of a hit-and-run in achieving results. It’s only when there’s many of those random successes that will convert a percentage of these people into those with the mindset of “must” succeed.

So what can you do today to make a small change?

  • Be 100% focused in whatever you are doing – you can be doing many things at a time, but as long as you are committed and you are focused enough to do through it – you will make it there!
  • Make it a Priority in your life. A general reference for the guys on how to make priority a possibility – it’s the same when you are determined and are persisted enough to trying to chase your dream girl. For the ladies – it’s the same when you want that branded bag and you can go on diet, scrimp and save just to get it. If you can have the same spirit for in your area of marketing – you will be amazed of the results!

Once you have the Mindset right, you are thinking like an Online Entrepreneur and are ready to move on to the Planning Stage:

2. Decide On The Marketing Strategies You Will Use

Plan on how you will bring your business in front of everyone and as many as possible. And there are many marketing tools available online now like:

  1. Twitter (sweet-to-the-point updates and instant follow-up)
  2. YouTube (video marketing)
  3. EzineArticles (article marketing); Press Releases
  4. Aweber Autoresponder (email marketing and building up a list)
  5. Blogging

You can use as many strategies as you will like – but key focus is to personally do the one you are strong in, e.g writing articles. Whereas the rest can be easily outsourced to virtual assistants. Does this begin to feel like a business whereby you have “employees” and you are the boss?

3. Monetize Your Area Of Marketing

Though there were many debates whereby many would suggest not to monetize too many areas of your marketing that early in the business – My personal views would be that if you are to wait for a crowd to appear first before you get to sell your stuff – you will be overrun by your overheads…

Therefore it would be best to strategically monetize in every bit of your business right from the start but not to the extreme (displaying Google Adsense Ads all over your site)

E.g. of strategic monetization are like:

  • Display a Sponsor Ad or affiliate link to the end of your content post to support (after you have shared your intended information)
  • Have an exit pop-up to share a related promotion or offer if your visitors decide that you do not have anything that he needs today

4. Have A Plan

Having a Plan is to make sure everything is going according as you have intended. For instance, in my course of running my sites, my lack of planning resulted in me not knowing what to do next… Should I be blogging or should I be participating in Forums or should I write another article…

No plans = waste of time and nothing achieve at end of day.

If you are doing your marketing aimlessly, get a piece of paper and write down stuffs that you need to achieve for your online business. Strike them out once you have done it (congrats!) and if you are seeing a pile of stuff to do, are you being lazy lately? See how effective planning is?

Even having a plan to tell yourself that you need to have the correct mindset, the need to implement some marketing strategies and various ways to monetize would serve you well!
